For My Niece
One day, I hope that you will speak
Find your voice that sounds so much like you
Doctors and scientists dangle a promise
the hope to resynthesize your voice
with computers, artificial technology to make you sound like you
Maybe then we can talk on the phone
In the future we can talk with ease, no longer straining to hear your voice
No sacrifice in the long pauses and strained words
Technology will fix it, this thing that you were born with
Down the road, you will communicate with others in a way that makes it easier, more fluid
Hopefully…
We wait for the change that will make life easier
We hope
We pray
But what do youย want?
How do you feel about today?
The here and now?
The promise of “fixing” you must sting, those words harsh, cold
You are more than a voice, broken by birth
You are more than a limp and low muscle tone
You are more than a label, a disability
You are my niece and I love you.

I thought that this was a very touching story. And I like how you explained how you felt. And now after reading this again, I realize that instead of this meaning to be a sad story, it is more of a reassuring, hopeful story.

This piece was unbelieveibly moving. A golden line I heard was, ” Doctors and scientists dangle a promise.” It was very hopeful. ๐๐

I connect to this because my best friend Maddie had epilepsy and we did not want her to feel less than other peolpe and know that she was loved.
March 19, 2014 at 1:23 pm
“Fixing”you must sting” That line stood out to me because yes she has a disabilitie but she is not broken she doesn’t need to be fixed she just has a disabilitie.
March 19, 2014 at 1:23 pm

My favorite line that you wrote is “The promise of โfixingโ you must sting, those words harsh, cold” because I think that it shows how she feels about the labels.

We are more than labels. We are individuals who happen to have this or that situation in our lives. These situations don’t define us but society pushes us in that direction. How to make others see how damaging this is to all of us…Thank you for sharing.
